October marks the start of National Cholesterol Month, an entire month devoted to raising awareness of high cholesterol and promoting good heart health, all led by Heart UK. Here at MOMA Foods, we’re also working hard to highlight the hidden heart health benefits of the awesome oat!
Oats, oats, they’re good for your heart….
Did you know: Oats contain a soluble fibre called beta glucan which helps to maintain normal cholesterol levels and has been shown to lower cholesterol levels. Beta glucans are a type of soluble fibre which (when eaten on a regular basis) can help to slow down the absorption of carbohydrates into the bloodstream. The slow absorption process goes some way to prevent sugar and insulin levels in the blood stream from spiking. It is these spikes that can trigger a reaction within our bodies to produce more fat and store it in areas of our body which can be bad for the heart.
Magical Magnesium - giving your heart a helping hand
Did you know: Oats contain super high levels of magnesium. The great thing about this super nutrient is that it’s involved with more than 600 chemical reactions in the body! This nutrient helps to support energy production in the body and has also been shown to help prevent heart attacks and strokes by supporting the muscles and vessels surrounding the heart.
